We can hardly believe it ourselves: HelpNDoc is now 20 years old! Two decades ago, we set out to create a help authoring tool that would be simple, affordable, and powerful. What started as a modest solution to our own documentation challenges has grown into a trusted tool used by a dedicated and ever-growing community of technical writers, authors, developers, and documentation enthusiasts worldwide. None of this would be possible without you. Your encouragement, support, feedback, and enthusiasm have made this journey nothing short of incredible. In this article, we’d like to take a trip down memory lane and celebrate what’s new with HelpNDoc since our 10-year milestone!

In our first 10 years, we saw HelpNDoc grow from a simple internal tool into a full-fledged help authoring powerhouse. It all started in 2004, when we launched Version 1.0 to make documentation easier and cheaper for everyone. By Version 2.0, we had added Word and PDF generation, making it possible for users to create professional documentation in multiple formats. Then, with HelpNDoc 3.0, we reimagined the entire user experience, adopting a new Office-inspired ribbon-based interface that made the tool even more intuitive. Version 4.0 brought automation into the mix, allowing users to script and automate tasks with our open API. The first decade was full of growth, challenges, and exciting feedback from our community that helped shape the future of HelpNDoc!

Back in the Version 5 days, we set the stage for a new era of customization. Imagine the scene: a brand-new responsive HTML template, glistening with a scalable UI featuring vector icons, ready to dazzle on high-resolution screens. This version wasn’t just about looks — it brought deeper control over templates, letting you easily customize Word and PDF outputs. The introduction of content snippets was like giving you the perfect boost, reducing repetitive tasks and making your workflow smoother. And just when you thought it couldn’t get better, we added a command-line automation tool to bring ultimate flexibility, putting the power truly in your hands.

🛠️ Unleashing New Tools for Total Control in Version 6

New ways to manage topics, customize properties, and work smarter.

In Version 6, we expanded the HelpNDoc universe with features that helped you take complete control. Imagine being able to track the progress of each topic — enter Topic Status, a brand-new way to mark content as in progress, complete, or anything else you need. We also gave every topic the ability to store custom properties, bringing endless possibilities for organizing and categorizing your projects. To make HelpNDoc even more accessible, we translated the entire interface into Spanish. Picture this: a revamped ribbon interface with a command search field, so you could find any feature instantly, keeping the creativity flowing. Finally, we introduced bar codes and QR codes — so your documentation could speak the language of modern connectivity.

✍️ Revolution Through a Complete Rewrite in Version 7

Rewritten from the ground up for speed, reliability, and more possibilities than ever before.

Version 7 was all about rewrites and revolution. We completely rewrote the PDF generator, making it faster, lighter, and more reliable — giving your documents the crisp, professional look they deserve. The script engine also got a complete overhaul, making automation smoother and more powerful than ever. But we didn’t stop there: a brand-new DocX importer brought lightning-fast and accurate imports, while the introduction of a Markdown generator and importer added modern flexibility for documentation workflows. Version 7 was all about turning user feedback into action and rewriting the tools to build a better future.

⚡ Reimagining Power with a 64-bit Boost in Version 8

A fresh look, powerful new tools, and a seamless upgrade for a modern experience.

Version 8 took everything up a notch. Imagine a sleek, new 64-bit architecture powering HelpNDoc — providing more stability, speed, and efficiency. We introduced a brand-new Word and PDF signing and encryption feature, allowing your documents to stay secure and professional. Style overriding capabilities gave you even more power to tailor your documentation just the way you wanted. We didn’t stop there: with full SVG support, your visuals became crisp and scalable for every resolution. We also rolled out a rewritten equation editor and a versatile new image editor with multi-layer capabilities, helping you create complex images effortlessly. On top of that, new build actions provided enhanced automation, keeping you productive and in control.

🤖 Rising with AI Assistance and Dark Mode in Version 9

AI-driven productivity, a touch of darkness, and features that make everything easier.

In Version 9, we introduced a game-changing feature — the AI Assistant, powered by OpenAI. This assistant helps users create, summarize, translate, and clarify content with just a few clicks, saving valuable time. Dark Mode made its grand entrance, allowing you to work comfortably whether you’re a night owl or just want to give your eyes a rest. We also added FTP upload support to seamlessly publish your outputs, a library override to give you ultimate control over content reuse, and a style search feature to make customization easy and fast. With expanded support for C#, JavaScript, Python, and PHP, HelpNDoc made programming integration even more flexible. Version 9 was all about giving you the tools you need to be productive, in the style that fits you best.
